Balling on Budget: My DIY “Rattan” Headboard

IMG_6517.jpg

I love spending money. No wait scratch that…I love spending other people’s money. However, since credit card theft is a crime, a girl’s best bet for decorating her home on a budget is DIY. DIY is probably the best thing since sliced bread and mimosas. Being able to get what you want a fraction of the cost is usually the highlight of my week.

This month’s DIY project (1 of many, can’t wait to show them all!) was finally getting a headboard. I haven’t had a headboard in years. Because my style has been so all over the place for sometime, I couldn’t decide on what I would like. I knew that I wanted something that was neutral since I liked to change colors a lot and something lightweight that wouldn’t damage my apartment walls. After spending countless hours on the God sent app that is Pinterest, the idea hit me like a wrecking ball….Wicker/Rattan. I’ve always loved this style and it seemed natural to add it to my eclectically boho house. So of course the next step is to buy it right…wrong! Every retailer wanted at least $400 or more dollars for this style of headboard and I just could not wrap my head around it or my wallet for that matter. (See what I originally wanted below!)

After doing some research on YouTube University, I came across this video by YouTuber, Interior Tom. Take a look at the video and my tips below:

Things I Did Differently:

  1. I could not find a single piece of bamboo for the base for this headboard so I substituted that for a wooden dowel (36in.) from Michaels.

  2. I did not like the look of the bamboo sticks on top of the raffia wrapped base of the headboard, so I decided to wrap the Ushape stakes in raffia as well for uniformity. Luckily I had a large amount of raffia to do this and did not have to order more. It is extremely time consuming but I loved the final outcome!

  3. I did not cross connect the Ushape stakes to the frame with larger cable ties (Time marker~ 3:48 on Interior Tom’s video). Because everything is so lightweight, I used raffia instead. So far it’s holding up nice!

  4. I did not hang this up with nails. I originally hung this up with thumbtacks (lazy, I know!) I tried command strips but they didn’t work well for me, but I recently discovered Scotch 1x1 Clear Mounting Squares and they are amazing!

How Much Did I Spend:

  1. Ushape Stakes (15 stakes, Home Depot) : $42.02

  2. Raffia (218 yards, Amazon) : $8.49

  3. Hot Glue Sticks (75 sticks, Amazon): $7.84

  4. Beige Contact paper (5ftx5ft, Amazon) : $5.99

  5. Hula Hoop (Small, Walmart) : $5.99

  6. Scotch 1x1 Clear Mounting Squares (Target) : $4.99

  7. Cable Ties (Small, Amazon) : $4.69

  8. Wooden Dowel (36in, Michael’s Craft Store) : $1.50

GRAND TOTAL : $81.51!!!!!

You can’t beat that price! Overall I did the project over the course of about 4 days, as I was waiting for some supplies to come in. Since this is so light I was able to hang it up on the wall with thumbtacks. This just shows that decorating your space doesn’t have to break that bank!
